Bird watching
Our Pantanal bird watching tour is a not-to-be-missed experience for any bird enthusiast. The sheer diversity and beauty of the birds within this region has to be seen to be believed, at whatever time of year you visit.
Whether you are an expert ornithologist or are trying bird watching for the first time, we guarantee that the bird life of the Pantanal will amaze you. Hyacinth macaws, the largest parrots in the world, are often seen in trees that surround the lodges we use for our tours. Numerous other species of macaws, parrots and parakeets, as well as toucans, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, birds of prey, storks and herons are in abundance. On our popular night safaris, you can often see nocturnal species such as owls, nightjars as well as potoos.
Photography
For the wildlife photographer, the Pantanal is a dream come true. There is ample opportunity to photograph not only the wide diversity of animals, but also the stunning flora and fauna, as well as the breathtaking sunsets and beautiful scenery. We always look to help you take the best photos possible and can recommend the best locations. This also includes patiently waiting for the right light conditions.
Hiking
The trails surrounding the lodges allow guests to explore a variety of ecosystems, including savannah, wetland, and woodland. Most of the trails are loops, so hikers can spend as long as they wish exploring. Hiking on these trails, allows you to see and touch the luxuriant flora and fauna of the Pantanal. Not only will you frequently see monkeys such as Black Tailed Marmosets, Capuchin Monkeys and Black Howler Monkeys, but you will be able to follow them as they swing through the trees above your head. Grassland and forest species such as deer and the South American coati are abundant and bird watching along the trails is also excellent. Our tour guide is an expert on the Pantanal’s plants and trees. They will identify common species and explain which plants have medicinal and culinary uses.
Boating
Boat trips provide an excellent opportunity to observe the giant river otter at close quarters. These are among the rarest otters in the world and are often one of the highlights of our visitors’ trips to the Pantanal. In the region of Porto Jofre, we occasionally see jaguars along the river banks; an experience of a lifetime! Other wildlife
commonly seen on the river includes capybara and caiman. Birds that are frequently encountered on the water include kingfishers, egrets, storks, herons, cormorants, anhingas and terns. We highly recommend adding an early morning or evening boat trip to your itinerary. This will give you the chance to enjoy spectacular sunrises or sunsets while viewing wildlife from a unique perspective. This experience is enriched by listening to the music provided by Pantanal’s wildlife, day and night.
Jaguar Tracking tour
This Jaguar Tracking itinerary is intended for a maximum of 4 people. The wildlife in the region of Porto Jofre is
fantastic and there is a very good chance of spotting the elusive and impressive jaguar. While tracking the jaguars, you can see other interesting wildlife such as monkeys, giant river otters, and numerous bird species from our well equipped boats. Our specialist knowledge of the Pantanal ensures that visitors are shown the best areas, so that they can fully appreciate the wild environment and have an excellent chance to see the jaguar in the wild. To find jaguars we use an indigenous instrument (esturrador), made of bamboo. By blowing into the esturrador our guide can imitate the unearthly roar of the mighty jaguar. Most visitors who spend five days or more in the Porto Jofre region will see a jaguar. Of course, we cannot offer a cast iron guarantee that you will see one of these marvellous creatures, but we can promise that you will see other equally breathtaking wildlife during your stay. Smaller cats such as the ocelot, as well as tapirs, giant anteaters, peccaries, foxes, howler monkeys and caiman are all a regular feature of the area, as well of course as the hundreds of species of birds, many of which are truly spectacular.
Night Safari
This can be one of the best ways to observe wildlife. There are two choices available. Firstly, you may opt for our guide to drive you along the dirt road known as the “Transpantaneira” which runs through much of the Pantanal wilderness. Visitors can enjoy the comfort and safety of observing wildlife in their natural habitat, whilst being driven by one of our highly experienced drivers. It is also possible to make stops along the way and turn off the Transpantaneira to enjoy the nocturnal sounds of the Pantanal. Alternatively, you may choose to go on foot. This option provides the best opportunity to allow all your senses to experience the wonders of this fantastic environment.
Family Tours
Our family tours are specifically designed to ensure that all family members, regardless of age or interest, can enjoy the wonders of the Pantanal. We can introduce children to the magic of this unique area through age-appropriate activities, always bearing in mind that attention can wander! Family trips are flexible and tailored to meet the requirements and interests of individual families. We like to encourage youngsters to feel actively engaged in the natural wonders of the Pantanal whilst ensuring their safety at all times. Our aim is to allow the whole family to get as close to nature as possible.
