Horse riding Programme:  this is suitable for both complete beginners and more experienced riders.

Day 1
Arrive at Cuiabá Airport where you will be met by your guide who will take you to a nearby restaurant for lunch.  You will then be driven to a local town called Poconé where you will be staying overnight at the Hotel Skala
In the afternoon your guide will give a brief talk about the Pantanal Horse including an explanation on the local style of horse riding.  You will also be introduced to the rest of the team who will be helping out during the expedition. Dinner is at a local restaurant in Poconé before returning to the Hotel for the night. (L, D)

Day 2 – Breakfast is followed by a 40 minute drive to a locally owned farm to collect the horses.  There will be a half day trek to your night’s accommodation at the Hotel Fazenda Carandá.  Along the way you will pass through swamps, grassland and woodland which are full of wildlife.  Capybaras, caimans, marsh deer and a variety of birds are often seen while riding.  Arrive at Carandá around 2pm in time for a late lunch. Afterwards you can choose to groom and feed your horse. Later in the afternoon a walk around the surrounding area to discuss and observe the structure of a typical Pantanal farm. Return to the Hotel for dinner and overnight accommodation. (B, L, D)

Day 3 – After breakfast, there will be a ride around the farm to watch the cowboys herding and lassoing cattle. This is a fairly large farm of 5000 hectares with roughly 1000 head of cattle. Lunch will be at the farm. 
In the afternoon we will take a rowing boat onto the Paraguaizinho River to look for giant otters, caimans and other interesting animals.  Dinner and second night stay at the Hotel Fazenda Carandá. (B, L, D).



Day 4
– Breakfast is followed by a 2½ hour walk to see different parts of the farm where the ground is swampier.  Then onto open grassland to search for more animals; this will take you up to lunchtime.  Following lunch there will be time to collect your horse and ride on to the next farm. You will ride through a variety of landscapes such as open grassland, deciduous, semi-deciduous and non- deciduous forests and marsh lands. This is a long but gentle ride lasting about 6 hours before reaching the next farm.  
Arrive at São Cristovão Farm around 6pm. This is another large farm and lies beside the River Bento Gomes. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the São Cristovão. (B, L, D).

Day 5 – After Breakfast, saddle up the horses for a trek to the Rio Claro Lodge. The ride will take about 3½ hours passing through different types of Pantanal farmland where we often meet Pantanal cowboys rounding-up cattle.  Arrive at the Lodge in time for lunch. The Rio Claro Lodge has very comfortable and attractive rooms and its own swimming pool where you can unwind after the day’s horse riding. Afternoon is free for you to relax, look around or possibly take a short boat trip.  There will be dinner and overnight stay at the Rio Claro Lodge. (B, L, D).

Day 6 – Collect your horse after breakfast for a trek to your final accommodation at the Araras Eco Lodge. This ride will take about 6½hrs and includes crossing the Rio Claro.   At this point in the ride, you will need to dismount and unsaddle your horse as they will swim across the river which is 100m wide.  You however will cross the river by boat, accompanied by your saddle!  After the horses are re-saddled on the other side, continue on all the way to Araras Lodge. 
Arrive at the Lodge in time for lunch.  In the afternoon you will visit a small, local farm.  Here you can learn more about the unique Pantanal Horse and the traditional way they are looked after.   Return to the Lodge for dinner.  Spend the evening listening to live Pantanal songs around a campfire.  Overnight stay is at the Araras Eco Lodge. Day 7 – Breakfast.  The remainder of the morning is free to pack up and say farewell to your horse and the team.  Return to Cuiabá Airport after lunch. (B, L, D)
