Nobres
Blue Lagoon - swimming with the fish.
(Recanto Ecologico Lagoa Azul)
This unforgettable tour begins at Nobres which is a small town located in the central, northern region of Mato Grosso. It is 140km from Cuiabá and strategically located in an area of transitional forest between savannah and the Amazon Forest. The region is known as the ‘Highland Province’ and is the geographical divide between the Amazon and Platina Basins. The local rock is limestone, which in Nobres has created a number of rivers and lakes containing incredibly, crystalline water. These provide a natural habitat for several species of fish and plants; making it perfect for snorkelling.
The tour then moves deeper into the Bom Jardim region to an area similar to the ecological zone of Bonito in the southern Pantanal. Nobres is far less developed than Bonito and so has the advantage of being much less touristy. Here you will snorkel in incredibly clear rivers filled with fish of all shapes and sizes. You will visit local caves and relax and swim in natural swimming pools; all under the watchful eye of local macaws which roost in the palm trees at night.
Nobres (Full day)
Day 1 Cuiabá / Nobres
Depart 8:30am after breakfast. The tour is bound for the Bom Jardim district of Nobres. Several stops will be made along the way to observe wildlife and to take in the stunning landscape.
Next is a swim in the natural swimming pool at the Estivado River before driving on to the ‘Recanto Ecologico Lagoa Azul’ (Blue Lagoon). Lunch is followed by a memorable snorkelling experience in the Blue Lagoon. This is fed by three separate springs and set within forest occupied by capuchin monkeys. As its name suggests; the water is an extraordinary blue colour with a magical, luminescent quality produced by the algae and magnesium present in the limestone. Even at the Lagoon’s deepest points, clarity is never lost. You will be surrounded by many varieties of fish, some of which will even try and nibble your toes!
Afterwards snorkelling in the Salobra River; where you will be carried along by a gentle current under the shade of the forest. There will be a few obstacles to negotiate such as fallen trees and branches, but your guide and a local snorkelling instructor will always be on hand to help.
