Jaguar Encounter

Special Jaguar Encounter in the Pantanal

Our recent tour guide (Pantanal Nature) work for Discovery Channel, see the video above !

This Jaguar Tracking itinerary is intended for a maximum of 6 persons. The wildlife in the region of Porto Jofre is fantastic and there is a very good chance of spotting the elusive and impressive jaguar.  While tracking the jaguars, you can see other interesting wildlife such as monkeys, giant river otters, and numerous bird species from our well equipped boats. Our specialist knowledge of the Pantanal ensures that visitors are shown the best areas,  so that they can fully appreciate the wild environment and have an excellent chance to see the jaguar in the wild.  To find jaguars we use an indigenous instrument (esturrador), made of bamboo.  By blowing into the esturrador our guide can imitate the unearthly roar of the mighty jaguar. Most visitors who spend five days or more in the Porto Jofre region will see a jaguar. Of course, we cannot offer a cast iron guarantee that you will see one of these marvellous creatures, but we can promise that you will see other equally breathtaking wildlife during your stay. Smaller cats such as the ocelot, as well as tapirs, giant anteaters, peccaries, foxes, howler monkeys and caiman are all a regular feature of the area, as well of course as the hundreds of species of birds, many of which are truly spectacular.

Camping at Pantanal Bios ( Jaguar Base ) in Porto Jofre
Our tented accommodation at Porto Jofre is set up at the very end of the Transpantaneira Road.   The site was chosen to ensure our guests have the best available chance to view as wide a range and number of wildlife as possible. The tents are simply furnished with comfortable beds and electricity. Toilets and hot showers are available on the site. All the tents have great views of the beautiful surroundings.  Jaguars and other interesting wildlife can be tracked directly from the camp site; many jaguars have been spotted hunting nearby for capybaras and caiman. (B, L & D).

Day 6 - An early morning start at 5am in time to watch the sunrise from the top of a 20m high observation tower positioned by the river.  This will also be an opportunity to observe both nocturnal and diurnal animals through a telescope.  Afterwards, a short canoe trip to spot the endangered giant river otter; a highly sociable animal who hunts and plays in packs.  Their loud grunting and chirping calls generally mean you will hear them before you see them. These graceful creatures are truly wonderful animals to watch. Breakfast followed by hiking.  Lunch and discussion on everything we have seen on the tour, using our Pantanal Wildlife Tick List as a reference.  It will then be time to pack up and return to Cuiabá in the afternoon.  You will be dropped off at the airport or city hotel according to choice.
